Whoa!
Just in to our Tualatin store (8380 SW Nyberg St, 503-612-0020, Open daily 10 to 4) is this amazing old (old!) mahogany dining table set.
It features a large (66 by 58 1/2 inch) top supported by a double pedestal base and also has one 21 1/2 inch wide leaf. It’s in good but not perfect condition. It has the original finish but it looks like someone top coated it with a shiny shellac. The pads which go with the table then sat atop this for a few decades leaving faint impressions and fiber traces. We’ve cleaned it but it could use a touch more work.
In addition to the table, leaf and pads there are eight dining chairs, six side chairs and two arm chairs. They’re in fair to good condition. The vintage lemon yellow upholstery is useable but not pretty. While you redo the upholstery it’d be a good chance to tighten up the joints on the six side chairs. Thanks to the use of natural glues (before the plastic horizon of the 1950’s) these joints weaken with exposure to moisture over time.
The set was made from heavy dense grained mahogany, likely at some point in the late 19th century. We we’re told it then came west sometime after 1914 via the Panama Canal.
