Yugoslavian Mid-Century Style Sofa

IMG_1769

Somehow between the fluorescing of the incredible Yugoslavian ‘Spomenik‘ sculptural movement, the advent of the Yugo, the decay of the state and civil war there was a briefly thriving Yugoslavian furniture industry.

I’m not sure of the full production range but it minimally included quality imitations of Scandinavian modern furniture. Like this chair we had a long time ago, or copies of Wegner’s copies of Ebert Wels ‘String Chair‘ (also sold).

This piece too is a good bit of work and probably derived from a western design. Just different enough to bypass design copyright concerns if sold in the west,  close enough to pass as progressive if sold on the other side of the iron curtain where western copyright didn’t count.

It is in good condition, measuring 79 inches wide, 31 deep, 29 inches tall to the top of the cushions (24 1/2 inches at the frame).
