Sugasawa for Tendo Mokko ‘Heron’ Rocking Chair

IMG_0933

Fabulous mid-century modern rocking chair. Originally designed around 1966 by Mitsumasa Sugasawa for Tendo Mokko, this was the winner of the prestigious Kitaro Kunii Industrial Arts Prize in 1996. A design that continues to win prizes after 30 years? That’s impressive.

It is called the Heron Chair and is made of made of bent and glue laminated Japanese oak. It a fabulous bit of construction, each side panel has no joints, just differently shaped pieces of wood glued together to form everything.

The chair measures 33 inches deep, 22 1/2 wide and 36 tall. We suspect the upholstery is not original but it’s hard to tell at they are still making the chair with more modern coverings. This chair has minor wear: scratches on the base of the rockers. light hand-wear at the ends of the arm, that sort of thing. All this makes me suspect that it is a vintage piece rather than a newer copy.

We’re asking $850 for this is an iconic piece of mid-century design.
